Q: What makes a Vita-mix® so special?
The employees…. Sure we could focus on the raw specifics of this marvelous tool, but doing so, simply leads us right back to their inception, the employees. The Vita-mix® Corporation was founded on the sole belief that beauty extends from within. A healthier exterior is a direct result of a healthier interior. Since the company’s inception in 1921, the family-owned powerhouse has practiced the basic belief of actually believing in their employees and their consistent success proves it further. It is the direct result of the Vita-mix® family, including its extending family of employees that their 90+ year history has blossomed into supplying the best blending equipment on the planet!
Q: Can you list some of the specific details and key factors that can be used to compare a Vita-mix® to a normal blender?
A Vita-mix® 5000/5200 is 20 1/2 inches tall, 7 1/4 inches wide, and 8 3/4 inches deep. The unit weighs 11 lbs., and the Super 5000/5200 weighs 13 lbs., including the dry blade container.
The motor is an open frame brush universal with a 2 peak motor horsepower rating and a blade tip speed ranging from 11 mph to 240 mph. The US model is 120 volts, 60 Hz, 11.5 amps, and 1380 watts. The Vita-mix® Corporation also offers the Vita-mix® in a 220 volt for international usage.
The Vita-mix® machine is built with a high efficiency radial cooling fan and has a built-in thermal protection system to prevent overload and burnout. If you do indeed overload your machine, the good thing is that you did not ruin your machine. The machine will need to cool down and will surely return to normal working status once properly cooled. You can speed up the cooling process by blowing a hair dryer through the air intake hole which is at the center of the bottom of the machine, or you can easily take the motor base and place it in your freezer for about 5 to 10 minutes and that will expedite the cooling process.
A Vita-mix® comes with a unique variable speed control dial which enables the machine to perform 35 different kitchen tasks without having several different attachments. Due to this unique feature, a Vita-mix® chops, whips, blends, freezes, cooks, stirs, purees, and so much more.
The Vita-mix® also comes standard with a patented 64 ounce polycarbonate container which allows you the ability to make a recipe that is as little as 4 ounces and as much as a 1/2 gallon. The company also offers 32 and 48 ounce polycarbonate containers as well.
Also, the Vita-mix® comes with an extra long 6 foot, 3 prong safety cord with a special hideaway feature that keeps the unused cord safely stored under the motor base versus being an unsightly wad of cord resting on your counter top.

Q: Really, why should I buy a Vita-mix®, I already have a good blender?
It is simply a matter of life and death. We all have heard "You are what you eat!"
Not only are we a direct result of "what we eat", but also "how we eat!" Many things such as the intervals in which we eat and how we eat have to be considered. We have to realize the dramatic effects on the human metabolism when meals are skipped, especially breakfast. We also do not chew our food enough. In a perfect world, you should chew your foods over 30 times before swallowing, allowing for easier digestion. Then again, it is not a perfect world, but a Vita-mix® is the perfect tool to offset the repercussions of our poor eating habits!
Someone, somewhere once coined the term “If it tastes good, it is probably not good for you. In all truth, “If it tastes good, you are probably going to eat it!” Because of The Vita-mix® 5000/5200, with its variable speed control, it is able to perform 35 food tasks including four food processes that no other machine can do: Whole Food Juice, Ice Creams & Sorbets, Hot Soups & Sauces, and Bread Dough (from milling grains into flour and kneading bread dough that is ready to rise in 5 minutes). Vita-mix® Whole food juice is the combination of the juice and fiber from either fruits or vegetables prepared in the Vita-mix® machine. The speed and tremendous force of the Vita-mix® 5000/5200 stainless steel blade tips travel at 240 mph at high speed and the customized hammermill and cutting blades literally pulverize food down to the cellular level. All the vitamins, enzymes, and nutrition come to you intact with full flavor in Vita-mix® whole food juice. Because Vita-mix® juice includes both the juice and pulp from your produce, it contains valuable nutrition that is missing in extracted juice. Vita-mix® juice helps make it easy to get the FDA recommended 5 to 7 servings of fruits and vegetables we need daily for a healthy diet. With all that said, we guess the obvious has now been brought to the forefront. Blenders just blend, whereas a Vita-mix® is a Whole Food Processor allowing you the ability to create whole food juices! The Vita-mix® is the absolute best investment you can make for you and your family's healthy longevity.
Q: What is whole food juice?
Whole food juice is the combination of the juice and fiber from either fruits or vegetables prepared in the Vita-mix® machine. Because the Vita-mix® 5000/5200 stainless steel blade tips travel at 240 mph on high speed, the tremendous force of these customized hammermill and cutting blades literally pulverizes the food down to the cellular level. Therefore, all the vitamins, enzymes, and nutrition are fully intact and packed full flavor in the finished product.
Q: Why is Vita-mix® juice better than extracted juice?
Vita-mix® whole food juices include both the juice and pulp from your produce. The pulp contains valuable nutrition that is missing in extracted juice. With that being said, Vita-mix® whole food juices make it so much easier to achieve the FDA recommended 5 to 7 servings of fruits and vegetables we need daily for a healthy diet. And just like anything else in life, it is easy to do, you might just do it!
Q: What’s special about the dry grains container offer from Vita-mix®?
The Vita-mix® comes standard with what is called a "wet" blade and are ideal for processing "wet" foods, like juices, soups, nut butters, and frozen treats. The wet blades pull food through the blades during processing. On the other hand, the dry grains container has blades specially designed for grinding hard herbs, coffee, sugars, as well as whole grains and kneading bread dough. The dry blades push foods up and away, making it the better choice for dry grinding or kneading sticky dough.
Q: How can I make really thick smoothies or alcoholic drinks in a Vita-mix®?
When making really thick drinks in the Vita-mix®, a trick of the trade is to use the tamper while making the drink to help reduce air-pockets or frozen pockets, and better the flow of the contents in to the blades. What happens often in a Vita-mix® is that because the blades homogenize the ice or frozen fruit so fast with the liquid and fruits that the machine might either create an air-pocket, or the bottom section of the container (bottom 3 cups) might be really thick and frozen and it will appear as if the machine does not look like it is doing much. But actually, it is doing exactly what it is designed to do. During this process the machine is breaking down the food or ice to a perfect creamy state. If you do nothing at all, as the machine runs on high speed, the friction will gradually take over and thin out the drink. As the bottom section starts to thin down the food will start to rotate on its own. You will see 2 different colors in the drink as the machine vortexes the food.
The natural rotation of most contents in the Vita-mix® is out from the bottom, up the sides, across the top, and then back down to the center again toward the blades, and then the journey begins again. The downside to not using the tamper is that the drink ultimately becomes too thin from this duration of friction. However, by using the tamper and constantly moving the tamper up and down and also left and right in a continuous motion while fully extended into the container will allow for a better mixture and movement of any thick air or frozen pockets. This will allow the contents to rotate quicker, therefore allowing for less time on high speed and keeping your drinks thick and smooth!
Important! - When making thick drinks or ice creams, if you do not have enough ice or frozen fruit in comparison to liquid then your drink or ice cream will be runny. On the other hand, if you have too much ice or frozen fruit and not enough liquid, then you might push the machine too hard to the point that the contents become so thick and frozen that the blades drag, which causes the fan to drag, but instead of burning out the motor, the Vita-mix® will cut off. A good rule of thumb for smoothies or any thick creamy drinks is to have about 50% liquid to 50% frozen.
Keep in mind that the more you use this machine, the better you will get at it, and the better you get at it, the more you are going to use this machine! Enjoy!
Q: For some reason I am afraid to make soup in my Vita-mix®.
A good rule of thumb for most soups is to have at least 5 basic vegetables: Carrots, Celery, Onions, Tomatoes, and Garlic. Any additional items provide that much more nutritional value and heartiness. When creating soups, you may start with either hot or cold water. The machine will create heat by friction, while processing at the highest speed. Starting your soup with hot water reduces the completion time from 6 minutes to 3 minutes. When using your machine, you will discover that most soup flavors are distinguished by seasonings. Many soup recipes are very similar with minor changes each time for different flavors and/or textures. The most common soup made by demonstrators is the infamous Tortilla Soup. Based on the fact that it is difficult for any demonstrator to teach someone the exact measurements for all of the 6 spices for the soup, the demonstrators now use a spice called "Blend It Up" and it is the perfect measurement, every time. Add Blend It Up to the Cart!
The Base Recipe to almost any Soup
1 celery stick
1 pearl or green onion
1 garlic clove
1 roma tomato
1 bullion cube (chicken, beef, tomato, pork by Knorr of Maggi - on the soup and mexican foods aisle, or Rapunzel's Vegetarian bouillon cube - Add to Cart )
4 to 5 shakes of seasoned salt
Pour 2 to a max of 4 cups of hot water into your wet container (pending how much soup you want to make), add the items listed above, place the lid on firmly, and start the machine on variable speed 1, turn the knob to 10, and then flip the switch to high. Let your machine run for 3 minutes on the high speed to create more heat to help offset any cold vegetables. Note: On high speeds, feel free to add any additional and/or optional items such as 1 or 2 mushrooms, 1” yellow squash, 1” zucchini, slice of red bell pepper, or cabbage. Keep in mind that when adding any optional items, just to add a little. It does not take much to alter the flavor of your soups when everything going in on a high speed is fully liquefied, including the seeds. There are several wonderful soup recipes to check out. Look Here!
Q: How can I get rid of some of the foaminess when making soups, as well as some of the thinner drinks that I make?
When making soups or any thinner recipes (meaning minimal to no ice or frozen fruits) you will find that fruits and vegetables tend be naturally frothy. Therefore, if you are blending these ingredients on high, it is usually going to leave about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick foam layer on top. However, when making such recipes, when your recipe is complete turn your machine down to variable speed 1 and then turn the dial toward 2, 3, etc., until the layer of foam circulates down in to the funnel toward the blades. This process will allow most of the foam to dissipate in to the broth or juice. Lastly, simply lower the blade speed back down to a variable speed 1, and then serve.
Q: The demonstrator mentioned the best way to make the perfect juice, smoothie, or ice cream consistencies is to understand the ratio's of frozen to not frozen ingredients.
A good rule of thumb on ratio's for juices, smoothie's and ice cream's are as follows:
JUICES 25% frozen / 75% not frozen = A 1 to 3 ratio.
SMOOTHIES 50% frozen / 50% not frozen = A 1 to 1 ratio.
ICE CREAMS 75% frozen / 25% not frozen = A 3 to 1 ratio.
An example would be an ice cream in which there would be 1 cup of liquid and roughly 3 cups of ice. Note: Frozen fruit is considered ice and can be used exclusively or in combination with ice or frozen fruit cubs (leftover juices or smoothies that were frozen in ice cube trays to avoid waste).
Q: I am starting to notice some kind of build up on my container and cannot get it perfectly clean. What is the best way to remove some of the stains?
To clean the container, put two cups of hot tea kettle
water, a squirt of dish soap and a peeled lemon in it, then run the machine on
high speed for six minutes. This will make the water boiling hot. After all the
soap suds in the container have liquefied, dump out the contents. Using a wet
terrycloth towel, rub the container up and down with force and the cloth will
pull out all the leftover buildup, returning it to a clear container. Note,
this does not work for the mini container after it is used for composting since
composting etches the interior.
Q: I cannot make ice cream in my Vita-mix® like the Vita-mix® demonstrator I watched make it.
Remember, when making ice creams and sorbets in the Vita-mix®, a trick of the trade is to use the tamper while making the frozen dessert to help reduce air-pockets or frozen pockets, and better the flow of the contents in to the blades. What happens often in a Vita-mix® is that because the blades homogenize the ice or frozen fruit so fast with the liquid that the machine might either create an air-pocket, or the bottom section of the container (bottom 3 cups) might be really thick and frozen and it will appear as if the machine does not look like it is doing much. But actually, it is doing exactly what it is designed to do. During this process the machine is breaking down the ice to a perfect creamy state. You will see 2 different colors in the frozen dessert as the machine creates a vortex of the food.
As always, the more you use this machine, the better you will get at it, and the better you get at it, the more you are going to use this machine! Enjoy!
Q: I am having a very difficult time getting the lid on and off of the container.
Your Vita-mix® comes standard with a patented spill proof vented lid and cap system. The upgraded 5200 lid is a huge improvement in this area. However, if you currently have a 5000 model, it is a good idea to "season" the lid by simply rubbing a light layer of vegetable oil on the outermost part of the lower region of the lid. When looking down into the container you will see a little lip on the very top part of the container on both the left and right side. Simply slide the bottom of the lid under one side, then apply a mild pressure on the opposite side, and you will hear the lid click right in to place. If the lid is on correctly, you should be to pick the container up off of the motors base with the lid only. To remove the lid, the easiest thing you can do is take the end of a butter knife and insert it just under the lid in the area where the spout is on the container. Simply press in a downward motion and the lid will pop up in an upward motion.
Q: I cannot get any of the videos to open from your web page. Please help?
Please go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ and do the free download. You need to have the most current version of QuickTime on your computer for the videos to show. Once downloaded and installed, the files will play automatically. The files are very large and pending your ISP, download times can vary. If even you feel you that you have QuickTime installed already, please download and reinstall.
Q: What is the difference between the recipes on this site versus the ones in the cook book that came with the Vita-mix®?
Most people buy a Vita-mix® from a live demonstration because the recipes they try taste so awesome, all while being healthy. But, once you get home and start making recipes from the book, they just do not seem to taste as good as what you tried when you saw the machine demonstrated. As you look through the recipe books that come with your machine further, you can find good recipes, but nothing exactly like what you witnessed when you made your Vita-mix® purchase. Therefore, that is exactly why our site was created. With any level of membership you will receive unlimited access and downloads to actual demonstrator recipes as well as discounts to any additional products like the soy or spice used by Vita-mix® demonstrators.
We believe you have made an excellent investment in your health. As we all know, Vita-mix® machines are not the cheapest things on the planet, but they are worth every dime. If you truly want to get every dollar back on your investment and then some, then you need to be a member. The Vita-mix® is awesome, but it is only as awesome as you are able to make it. The recipes that we have are 100% guaranteed demonstrator recipes.
Q: I like to use frozen fruit because it is more convenient, but am I giving up valuable nutrition for this convenience?
Some believe that frozen fruits are actually better because they are allowed to ripen fully on the bush and is immediately frozen, unlike fresh berries which are picked slightly prematurely and further ripen while in route and on the store shelf. Fruits allowed to ripen in their natural state have been found to be more nutrient dense than those that ripen on the back of a truck. However, if the berries are frozen from raw there should be little to no nutrient loss. Also note that the anthocyanins, the potent cancer fighters in berries are unaffected by freezing.
Q: How do you know when you need to sharpen the blades? My machine does not crush ice as good as it use too.
Actually, the Vita-mix® blades are relatively dull from day one! Therefore, there will never be a need to remove or sharpen the blades. This is a popular question though. More times than not your Vita-mix® is doing exactly what it was designed to do, and there is just a minor user error at hand. Before you blame yourself though, lift the empty container off the base and take the part where the teeth are located (bottom of the blade assembly) and turn it with your fingers. The blade assembly should turn smoothly with a very slight resistance. If the blade is very difficult to turn or as you turn it you can feel notches or small bumps, then there is a chance that the bearings might be malfunctioning and you should contact Vita-mix® for further assistance. (Their number is on the back of your machine!) If you find the blade turns smoothly, then there is a high probability that your recipes are simply suffering from too much frozen and not enough liquid. Remember, a good rule of thumb is that smoothies are 50% frozen ingredients and 50% non-frozen ingredients. When you turn your machine on high and the ingredients are not pulling down towards the blade simply use the tamper to help reduce air-pockets or frozen pockets, and better the flow of the contents in to the blades. What happens often in a Vita-mix® is that because the blades homogenize the ice or frozen fruit so fast with the liquid that the machine might either create an air-pocket, or the bottom section of the container (bottom 3 cups) might be really thick and frozen and it will appear as if the machine does not look like it is doing much, or that that machine does not work as good as it did when it was new. But actually, it is doing exactly what it is designed to do. During this process the machine is breaking down the ice to a perfect creamy state. You will see 2 different colors in the frozen dessert as the machine vortex's the food. Just knowing that all the major blending companies use Vita-mix® tells you that these machines can handle plenty of household usage!
Q: Is there a grocery list available that demonstrators use when they shop for supplies?

Q: I love the juice I buy at my local health food store. Can I make that kind of Apple Juice with my Vita-mix®?
This is a good question but can have a really complicated answer. The easy part is that a Vita-mix® can yield a far more nutrient-dense juice than a practical juice extractor. Apples are very fibrous foods. With that being said, there is not that much juice in an apple. Therefore, if you want to drink the whole apple and you do, then you need to add a little liquid for the fiber to break down in too. We came across this same thing years back and first tried it with a 6 to 8 ounces of water, a small golden delicious apple and some ice, but some children do not like it too much. It definitely turns it in to a liquid, yet it is still has a bit of a heartier texture than extracted juice and of course not as sweet. We personally like this but some kids did not. Next, we did the same recipe but with a packet of Stevia and that went over better. What really hit a home run was to use 6 to 8 ounces of 100% apple juice which is not from concentrate, 1 small golden delicious apple and 1 cup of ice. You have to run your machine about 90 to 120 seconds and it is not a bad idea to add an ice cube or two just about 20 seconds before the end. This is all done on high speed. Traditional juice recipes tell you to core the apple but we do not. The whole apple, quartered, goes in and consumed. If you want to thin down the juice further, you can pour your juice in to a cheesecloth and squeeze the thinnest of juices out. Because almost all of the blended apple is now liquid, you will have minimal waste in comparison to standard juicers. But, as you are aware, what stays behind is lost nutrition. See the Juice Section for more recipes!
Q: My container shifts/moves sometimes when I turn it on. Is that normal?
Absolutely! Your Vitamix® is self-aligning, so there is no need to place the container on the base any perfect way. All you have to do is set the container on the rubber landing pad and it somewhat falls in to place. When you turn the machine on sometimes the container will turn counter-clockwise a short distance until the container base touches one of the rubber footings it is mounted upon, and after that it should stay in place.
Q: I want to join your site but only have an AOL email address. Why cannot I not use my AOL email?
We would be more than happy to allow the usage of your AOL email. However, in years past, we have received very discouraging emails from our server company that they were receiving notifications that we were creating spam and violating certain issues. Our server company was very specific to point out that AOL was the biggest thorn and they advised us to put the block. Ever since, no troubles whatsoever. Here is what we suggest and it works perfectly. Use this link (Get A Gmail Address Now!) and create a gmail account for free. Once created simply go in to the settings and forward all emails coming in to your gmail account to your AOL account. After that is done, it will be like all emails come direct to AOL and we bypass any issues. It is really easy and we can help you if need be. If you decide to join our site, use the gmail address and you are good to go!
